White cranes in the valley of buildings, in the curtain of night

night's dark curtain—
between the city towers
a white crane descends

The "veil of night" creates a silence that envelops the city, and the appearance of a "white crane" amidst the hard, urban landscape of "canyons of buildings" blurs the boundary between reality and fantasy. It is precisely this sense of incongruity that gives the haiku its appeal.
