Night view of Chatan

The name of Chatan Town comes from "Kitatan Makiri," where "Kitatan" is an old place name and "Makiri" means an administrative division unique to the Ryukyu Islands.
The first appearance of the name is believed to be in a letter of appointment called "Kitatan Okite" given to local officials by King Sho Shin in 1577. The kanji for "Chatan" was used in the process of being incorporated into the Japanese shogunate and feudal domain system after the Shimazu invasion (Ryukyu invasion) in 1609.

The Mihama district, located on the west coast, is home to American Village, a popular spot for tourists and those associated with the U.S. military stationed in the area. It also boasts entertainment and retail facilities such as the relatively large Aeon Ryukyu (formerly Ryukyu Jusco) Aeon Chatan Store (Aeon Chatan Shopping Center), which is visited by many local residents and tourists.
